VALENTINES HOMESCHOOL

13/02/2015

Our week of montessori inspired homeschool continued with our Valentines theme and as we got into the spirit of the season we couldn’t resist carrying it on to our outfits (yup!) Most of the activities were a continuation from the first week with a few new things thrown into the mix and of course I had a great time prepping and planning our heart themed trays, even purchasing a few new props from our local poundshop!

We continued with some more pegging work but taking it up a level by swapping the standard size pegs for these adorable mini heart pegs I found at our local craft shop. She wasn’t too pleased about this at first and kept demanding the bigger ones back. So we went back to the bigger pegs, as I slowly re-introduced the smaller ones. By the end of the week we were back to using just using the mini pegs and she had no problem at all manoeuvring them around that curvy heart shaped bowl! Success.

We also did more transfer work, this time using pink buckets and some heart shaped table scatters I bought from Poundland. We used these table scatters again later in the week as counters for a maths game. But it was amazing to see how much her pincer grip movements had improved as she really struggled with controlling these tongs last week whereas this week she had it mastered. That being said, she did still resort to tipping them into the bucket towards the end of the activity but hey, thats just common sense!

Lacing and threading is another brilliant fine motor activity and sewing this cutesy heart banner – again another bargain from Poundland was a fun reminder to practice this skill. We’ve done quite a bit of bead threading before using the oversized MELISSA & DOUG wooden lacing beads set. So making this banner which consisted of stringing together felt hearts onto ribbon using a blunt needle was quite a bit more complicated than we were used to. This was her first time using a needle and she took to it like a pro (so proud!) In fact I was really impressed with how competent she was at this and it’s inspired me to present her with even more challenging sewing skills like weaving or maybe even some large scale embroidery.

We also did quite a bit of arts and crafts this week making lots of lovely heart shaped valentines cards for all our friends. We focused on experimenting with different paint effects using pom pom brushes and then here we are exploring tissue paper collage and practising our gluing skills. I’ve been trying to limit art materials until she has mastered a particular technique as I’ve found it helps maintain her interest and concentration if she isn’t overwhelmed by too many choices. The trays provide the perfect vehicle for this kind of learning as everything is pre-prepared and she is able to focus on the task at hand.

There’s been quite a lot of talk in our house about opposites lately, with particular interest taken in pointing out the differences between big and small. So I gave her a bowl of mixed sized paper hearts to sort into piles of differing size. She really enjoyed this and I can tell she finds this kind of work extremely satisfying, which is great as it helps develop logical thinking. Compare and contrast tasks also help towards building an early understanding of maths so its a great practice all round!

So thats it, our week of Montessori inspired Valentines tot trays. Its been a great opportunity for me to learn and observe her interests and abilities so that I can start planning ahead our next week of homeschool fun!
