POP-UP FLOWER SHOP

02/03/2015

We recently surprised our little one with a pop-up florist, styling up our GREAT LITTLE TRADING CO wooden play shop / theatre to inspire an opportunity for dramatic role play fun with lots of potential for learning all about flowers!

The play shop was Bou’s big Christmas pressie this year and it’s already played out plenty of situations and scenario’s mostly acting as a grocery store slash tea shop. There are so many pretend play shops on the market at the moment and all with different pros and cons but we decided on this one as not only is nice and sturdy but it also sits on wheels. This was perfect for us as we don’t have a space for it to permanently sit and wanted something we could move around the house. It can also easily be customised using its chalkboard sign and we’ve got plans to set it up as a puppet theatre in the future where I might even get round to making some new curtains.

To set up our flower shop we utilised some pink buckets and a couple of mini vases for flower pot displays using a selection of fake flowers I had leftover in my crafting stash from making garlands last summer. We also had some wooden boxes where we sorted and categorised the flowers from a selection of daisies, poppy’s, daffodils and yellow and red roses.

We did some flower arranging as we chatted about the different types of flowers and I also laid out some tissue paper to teach Bou how to make bouquets – she just loves wrapping and unwrapping! Folding the bouquets became a great exercise in co-ordination not to mention creative flair as she got to hand deliver them to all her customers (ahem family members!) For older kids you could even include a notebook for practicing literacy skills like taking orders and maybe even some gift cards for them to write little notes.

After all the bouquets were arranged and wrapped we did some customer role play using her toy WOODEN CASH TILL and some paper play money – again another great opportunity for learning some early math and counting plus encouraging conversation and practicing social skills and interaction.

The pop-up flower shop has been such a hit, not only with Bou but also with all her little friends. Now that spring is just around the corner and flowers are beginning to bloom its a brilliant opportunity for encouraging curiosity and exploration as well as the perfect pre-cursuer to our upcoming week of homeschool – nature study!
