MAY DAY GARLANDS

DIY / April 30, 2015

May Day is on it’s way! So to get into the mood for our annual, local Hastings JACK IN THE GREEN gathering that takes place on May Day Monday we decided to make some festive flower garlands for our hair. The first of May has long been associated with fun and revelry throughout history with the Celts celebrating the Pagan, Beltane rights and the Romans dedicating the day to worshiping the goddess of Fauna. So we couldn’t think of anything more fitting then busting out some beautiful blooms to create a handmade hairpiece to celebrate the season in style.

MAKING

First determine the circumference of you head. You can either use a measuring tape or simply wrap the wire around you head. I prefer to do the latter as I use two lengths of florist wire (bought direct from my local florist) which I then form and twist together to create a hoop. It doesn’t have to be too exact, just as long as the crown will sit comfortably but firmly on your head.

Once the wire frame hoop is complete you will need to cover it to make it more comfortable to wear. You can wrap the hoop in yarn but I prefer florist tape as its self-adhesive which means it will give a nice smooth coverage and help keep the wire in place.

Next get busy decorating the hoop with a selection of foliage and flowers – we used a mix of plastic flowers and paper wire stemmed flowers plus plastic leaves.

Use little bits of low gauge craft wire to wrap and secure the plastic flowers and greenery onto the hoop. Florist tape and a glue gun will also work to secure your decorations.

Wrap the hoop until you are happy with the way it looks. You will probably want to keep trying it on and checking in a mirror as you build up the design to see how it will look once its on your head. My design was based around a floral centrepiece with greenery framing it either side. But the finished design is totally down to personal preference as you could continue winding it the whole way round and of course you can go as minimal or as over the top as you like!

May Day traditions and customs have become notorious In Hastings with the Jack in the Green festivities famously featuring mobs of morris dancers, music, processions, parades, crazy costumes, crowning of May queens and the slaying of the Jack to release the spirit of Summer.

And if that wasn’t enough we also have thousands of bikers that descend into town on their motorcycles for the May Day Run where they rendezvous and rally on the Hastings seafront to sit on the beach and eat fish and chips. Hence the leather jacket and the moped!

We feel so lucky living in a town where ancient English traditions and customs are alive and well and can’t wait to get involved with all the May Day mirth and merriment this year. The giving and receiving of flowers is such a big part of the celebrations – whether thats decorating the home, making your neighbour a posy or putting together a garland. Whatever you choose to do this year – do it with flowers in your hair! Wishing you all a very happy May Day bank holiday weekend.
